In the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), students don’t just learn subjects like Math or Science separately. Instead, they explore big ideas that connect multiple subjects together. This way of learning is called transdisciplinary, and it’s designed to help students make meaningful connections across different areas of knowledge.
To support this, the IB uses something called Approaches to Learning (ATL)—a set of important skills that students need not just in school, but in life. These skills help students think critically, research effectively, communicate clearly, work well with others, and manage themselves.
What Are the Five ATL Skills?
Here’s a quick and easy breakdown of the five ATL skill areas that the PYP focuses on:
1. Thinking Skills
Students are encouraged to think deeply, creatively, and critically. They learn how to reflect on their ideas and understand how they think—this helps them become more independent learners.
2. Research Skills
Students practice how to find, understand, and evaluate information from different sources. This helps them become smart, thoughtful researchers who know how to check if information is reliable.
3. Communication Skills
Students learn to express their ideas clearly and confidently. They develop strong reading and writing skills and use technology to share their thoughts with the right audience for the right purpose.
4. Social Skills
Working with others is key. Students learn to listen, share responsibilities, and respect different points of view. These skills are developed through teamwork and group activities.
5. Self-Management Skills
Students build independence and learn how to organize their time, complete tasks, and solve problems on their own. This helps them become responsible and confident individuals.
Do These Skills Change As Students Grow?
Yes! The ATL skills are taught differently depending on a student’s age or grade level. Younger students might practice simple versions of these skills, while older students take on more complex challenges. But the goal remains the same: helping every student practice, master, and apply these skills throughout all their learning.
