We believe that knowledge is most powerful when it is used to empower others. This March, our Grade 7 students proved exactly that by stepping out of their roles as learners and into the shoes of teachers. In their first major partnership project of the school year, our Middle Schoolers headed to Wat Panprasittharam School (โรงเรียนวัดปานประสิทธาราม), one of our valued partner schools, to use what they know to teach English to local primary students.
From Students to Mentors
The purpose of the expedition were two things: to give our students a real platform for leadership and to offer genuine help to the local community through English language support. This service-learning project runs across the entire semester, and this first visit was just the beginning. Under the guidance of their teachers, the students studied the art of teaching; they wrestled with the questions every teacher faces, such as how to make a lesson stick, what tools actually help a child learn, and how to lead with compassion.
To turn their plans into reality, they worked with their teachers to build ready-to-go lesson plans designed specifically to help younger Thai students build a strong foundation in English. Their lesson plans focused on three important areas:
- Alphabet and Sounds: Building letter recognition and phonetic awareness as the base of English
- Everyday Vocabulary: Picking up words that come up in daily conversations and using them in sentences
- All About Me: Learning to introduce themselves and exchange simple greetings in English
Teaching Across a Language Barrier
At Wat Panprasittharam School, our Grade 7 students were matched with Grade 1 to 3 students. To keep the learning personal and hands-on, they broke into smaller groups so every student had direct support as they worked through the activities.
The day was not without its challenges. Many of our students come from international backgrounds and do not speak Thai, so the language barrier was a real and immediate obstacle. But when words failed, they did not stop. They used universal body gestures, leaned on classmates who could help translate, and repeated instructions until the lesson got through. They thought on the spot, adapted, and found a way to connect across the gap. That persistence was, in many ways, the most important lesson of the day for the Grade 7 students.
Service Learning That Goes Beyond the Grade
We often talk about “meaningful service” at D-PREP, but seeing it in action, like watching a Grade 7 student patiently guide a Grade 1 student through a worksheet, is what gives that phrase its weight. This mentorship experience is a perfect example of how we teach; it values hands-on learning, real-world application, and developing students who lead with empathy. By using their own talents to benefit a public school, our students realized that their education is a tool to empower others, not just themselves.
We are deeply grateful to our teachers and staff who worked behind the scenes to make this partnership project a reality, and to Wat Panprasittharam School for the warm welcome and for embracing this partnership with open arms. We look forward to many more opportunities where our students can continue to give back and where caring for our community matters as much as learning in the classroom.
